Strike by Starbucks baristas spreads to over 300 stores across 45 states

A Starbucks barista strike involving 5,000 workers at over 300 stores in 45 states is expanding as the company’s holiday season approaches. Organized by the Service Employees International Union and Starbucks Workers United, the strike aims to address alleged unfair labor practices and stalled contract negotiations. The workers are seeking an immediate increase in Starbucks’ minimum hourly wage by up to 64% and over 77% over a three-year contract period. The Workers Union president, Lynne Fox, emphasized the value of baristas and their refusal to accept proposals that do not treat them as true partners.

A Starbucks executive noted that the union’s demands are not sustainable, but highlighted the benefits package that workers currently receive, including an average of $30 per hour for employees working at least 20 hours a week. The company expressed willingness to continue negotiations when the union returns to the bargaining table, even though the union walked away from bargaining last week.

The strike comes after Starbucks hired former Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol to lead the company, which initially boosted investor sentiment but led to recent share price declines. Niccol has promised to negotiate with the union in good faith, despite his history of settlements with workers during his time at Chipotle. The outcome of the strike and negotiations will be crucial for Starbucks as it navigates ongoing labor disputes and market challenges.
