Starbucks workers in Davenport, Iowa, are taking part in a national unfair labor practice strike in an effort to push for better wages. The Starbucks Workers United baristas at the East 53rd Street location are calling for fair pay and have joined the strike after contract negotiations stalled and the company proposed unlivable wages. The strike began in Seattle, Los Angeles, and Chicago and has been expanding to other locations each day.
The union representing the workers has demanded immediate and future pay raises, noting that even though the Quad Cities area has a $15 minimum wage, it is still not enough to make a living in the current economy. Employees hope that customers and community members will show their support by joining picket lines and urging Starbucks to engage in meaningful bargaining over fair wages.
In addition to Davenport, an Iowa City Starbucks location has also joined the strike. The workers are determined to have their voices heard and are calling on Starbucks to prioritize fair compensation for its employees.
