Car plows into crowd in New Orleans, resulting in at least 10 fatalities

In New Orleans, at least 10 people were killed and more than 30 others were injured during New Year’s celebrations when a man intentionally drove his pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street around 3:15 a.m. The suspect, identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar, then opened fire on police officers after crashing his vehicle. It is being investigated as an act of terrorism by the FBI.

The suspect bypassed barricades to target as many people as possible, according to New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick. He may have had a black ISIS flag on his truck. Federal and local investigators are looking into the use of improvised explosive devices in the attack.

Witnesses described a horrifying scene with bodies on the street, and many injured victims. The injured, including two police officers, are being treated at local hospitals. Mayor LaToya Cantrell called it a terrorist attack, and Louisiana leaders expressed condolences and vowed justice for the victims.

New Orleans’ Bourbon Street is a popular tourist area, and the attack occurred during a busy time for celebrations. President Biden has been briefed on the incident, which shocked residents and visitors alike. The investigation is ongoing to determine the suspect’s motives and the full extent of the damage caused by this tragic event.
