Hundreds of Iowans gathered on July 11, 2023, at the Capitol rotunda in support of both for and against abortion restrictions. This came after the Iowa Supreme Court’s decision to allow the state’s six-week abortion ban to take effect. The court’s 4-3 ruling on June 28 permitted enforcement of a law banning most abortions after cardiac activity is detected in an embryo, potentially as early as six weeks into gestation.
Reproductive health care providers, including advocates from ACLU and Planned Parenthood, expressed concerns over the impact of the Supreme Court decision on women seeking abortions in Iowa. They warned that the law will create obstacles, forcing some women to seek care out of state and potentially putting others at risk of serious health consequences.
While the injunction on the abortion law has been lifted, there is still a time lapse before enforcement begins. Planned Parenthood and other providers have been preparing for the restrictions to take effect, offering assurances that they will continue to connect Iowans with necessary health care, even if that requires traveling out of state.
Additionally, concerns have been raised about the potential impact on in vitro fertilization due to the law’s language regarding “unborn” children. Legal experts predict further restrictions may be introduced by Iowa lawmakers in the future, with Democrats aiming to use voter dissatisfaction with GOP policy on abortion to regain some political power in the state.
