Ames City Council Denies Liquor License for Perfect Games Amid Criminal Concerns
In a decisive move, the Ames City Council voted unanimously to deny the liquor license renewal for Perfect Games during their recent meeting. This decision follows the Iowa Department of Revenue’s rejection due to the criminal history of majority owner Carl Markley, who is serving a life sentence for sex trafficking, raising concerns about his "good moral character" necessary for liquor licensing.
Kelly McPartland, part owner of Perfect Games, urged the council to reconsider, citing an ongoing appeal and legal constraints preventing the removal of Markley as an owner. However, the council maintained their stance, suggesting the company could reapply for a license once ownership changes. The establishment’s current liquor license is valid until May 12.
Additionally, the council imposed enhanced penalties for nuisance party violations during 801 Day, with immediate towing for illegally parked vehicles in the area. Mayor John Haila emphasized the importance of community hubs like the Ames Public Library, which plans to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 9. The council also celebrated Fair Housing Month, honoring social worker Kathy Pinkerton and approving a vision plan for downtown Ames while naming a new pitch at Lloyd Kurtz Park in honor of donors Kurt and Sindy Friedrich.
