Millions of people across the South are currently facing the threat of damaging winds, strong tornadoes, and hail as the region prepares for potentially destructive storms. Multiple tornadoes have already been reported in Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi in recent days, with the National Weather Service confirming five tornadoes in Texas on Thursday alone. The current weather risk affects 17 million people from east Texas to Alabama, including major cities such as Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Houston, Jackson, and Birmingham.
The National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center has warned of possible storm development during the early morning, with more storms likely in the afternoon. The strongest storms and the greatest tornado threat are expected in late afternoon or early evening. A tornado watch is currently in effect for an area spanning from east Texas to southwestern Mississippi, where damaging gusts, large hail, and a few tornadoes may occur.
In addition to the severe weather impact, there have been over 3,360 flight delays and 162 cancellations within, into, or out of the U.S. as of 11 a.m. ET on Saturday. Most of these disruptions are centered around Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, with hundreds of delays and nearly 100 cancellations. Travelers are advised to monitor the weather conditions and check for updates regarding their flights.
