Local contractor Austin Wilkinson has proposed to take over the maintenance of Fairfield’s compost site, which was closed in August due to abuse. Wilkinson is offering to manage the site on a personal basis, allowing the public to drop off brush or pick up free mulch once again. His plan includes creating a separate tree waste dumpsite for commercial users and implementing a pay-per-load system. The City Council has referred the matter to the Environmental and Franchise Utilities Committee for further consideration.
In related news, Fairfield resident Chris Sorflaten has suggested applying for an EPA grant to turn yard waste into biochar, a method of sequestering carbon. Sorflaten also proposed recycling glass into “glass mulch” for landscaping. The council decided to table the grant application until next year due to time constraints. Both proposals offer innovative solutions to managing waste and promoting sustainability in the community.
