Iowa Legislature Enacts New Law to Shield Seniors from Crypto Fraud

In a significant move to protect older Iowans, the Iowa Legislature has passed a law aimed at curbing fraud at unregulated cryptocurrency kiosks. These machines, resembling ATMs, have become popular yet risky, particularly for the senior population. The new law mandates that crypto operators display warnings highlighting the financial risks involved and limits transactions to a maximum of $1,000 per day.

Paige Yontz, the state advocacy manager for AARP Iowa, revealed that over $20 million in fraudulent activity involving cryptocurrency kiosks occurred in Iowa in 2024 alone. Older adults are particularly vulnerable due to the novelty of this technology, often misled into believing that converting their savings to Bitcoin offers security.

Yontz noted, "This level of protection is going to be really, really important for older Iowans." The law is part of a broader, nationwide effort to address financial scams targeting seniors, reflecting growing concern over the unregulated nature of cryptocurrency transactions. As more states implement such measures, this new legislation represents a vital step forward in safeguarding vulnerable populations against financial exploitation.
