In early 2021, 4-year-old Scarlette Wheelock stopped eating her favorite foods and showed signs of speech delays and hearing issues. After being diagnosed with Bell’s palsy and experiencing symptoms of a brain tumor, she underwent emergency surgery at the University of Iowa Health Care. Scarlette was diagnosed with a slow-growing cancerous brain tumor that required a 15-month chemotherapy course. Despite losing hearing in her right ear and facing permanent remnants of the tumor, Scarlette’s prognosis is positive, with regular MRI scans showing the tumor decreasing in size.
Scarlette’s journey at the Stead Family Children’s Hospital was marked by resilience and positivity, as she completed her chemotherapy treatment in July 2023. Now 7 years old, Scarlette continues to undergo regular scans to monitor her condition. While Scarlette remains unaware of the full extent of her cancer story, her mother stays cautiously optimistic about her daughter’s future. Scarlette’s story serves as an inspiration of hope and courage in the face of adversity.
