Over 150 groups and organizations are urging Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds to sign up for the Summer EBT (SUN Bucks) program for next summer. Reynolds had opted out of the program this past summer to create her own summer food program, but her application was denied by the USDA. The SUN Bucks program provides $40 per month on EBT cards to each child in a low-income family during the summer months. The petition from the groups and organizations asks Reynolds to reconsider and submit a letter of intent to participate in the SUN Bucks program before the January 1 deadline. They argue that parents and caregivers should be trusted to make the best food choices for their children and that the SUN Bucks program would provide important nutrition benefits to families in need. The letter is signed by a diverse range of organizations, including churches, food pantries, and advocacy groups, all calling on Reynolds to ensure that no child in Iowa goes hungry next summer.
