Fort Madison’s Softball Legend Erica Darnell Inducted into Iowa State Hall of Fame
Fort Madison High School’s softball legacy will be forever marked by Erica (Martinez) Darnell, a 1999 graduate, who is poised to be inducted into the Iowa State University Hall of Fame on October 24. Darnell, celebrated for her stellar collegiate career, will be honored at Jack Trice Stadium during a football game against BYU on October 25.
Standing at 5-foot-3, Darnell, regarded as one of Iowa State’s greatest athletes, dominated the field from 2000 to 2003. Her accolades include being a Third Team All-American, a three-time First Team All-Big 12 selection, and holding multiple records, such as 27 home runs and 88 RBIs. Darnell frequently emphasizes that while her achievements are noteworthy, the relationships forged with teammates stand out as her most cherished memories.
A dedicated coach and mother of two, Darnell has returned to Fort Madison, where she now leads a travel softball team that includes her daughter, Lucia. Looking to inspire the next generation, Darnell joins the coaching staff at Fort Madison High School, eager to impart her knowledge and experience.
