Despite a solid offensive effort, the Utah men’s basketball team fell short in a neutral-site matchup against Iowa, losing 95-88. The loss marked Utah’s final chance for a significant Quad 1 win in nonconference play. The Utes finished nonleague action at 8-3.
Utah coach Craig Smith expressed frustration at missing out on the opportunity to secure a win on the road in a hostile environment. Despite leading by 11 points early in the second half, Iowa’s offense, led by Payton Sandfort’s 24 points, eventually wore down Utah.
Solid performances from Mason Madsen, who scored 24 points, and Lawson Lovering, with a career-high 25 points, were not enough to secure the win. Iowa’s assertiveness in attacking the paint and superior shooting percentages ultimately led to their victory.
Utah will enter Big 12 play with an 0-3 record against Quad 1 or Quad 2 opponents, after losing to Mississippi State and Saint Mary’s earlier in the season. The team will now regroup over the holiday season before facing Baylor in the Big 12 opener on December 31.
