IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa has announced that the women’s basketball team will retire Caitlin Clark’s No. 22 jersey in a ceremony on Feb. 2 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Clark, who recently finished her college career as the all-time leading scorer in NCAA Division I history, has been widely recognized as a transformational figure in women’s basketball.
Clark’s playing style and long-distance 3-point shots gained her a large following of fans who often sported her jersey at games. She was drafted No. 1 overall in the WNBA last spring and named Rookie of the Year. The number retirement ceremony will take place during the Hawkeyes’ game against Southern California, with Clark in attendance.
Iowa athletic director Beth Goetz praised Clark for inspiring young athletes and leaving a lasting impact on women’s basketball. Clark’s record-breaking achievements include becoming the all-time women’s NCAA Division I scoring leader and leading her team to the NCAA championship game in consecutive years. She is the only player in Division I history to lead her conference in scoring and assists for four seasons in a row.
