Iowa State Board of Canvass Certifies Results from 2024 General Election
The Iowa State Board of Canvass has officially certified the results from the 2024 general election, finalizing races across the state. The board, comprised of Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate, Gov. Kim Reynolds, Treasurer Roby Smith, Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, and Auditor Rob Sand, met virtually to make the results from the Nov. 5 contests official.
In a press conference on Monday, Secretary of State Paul Pate revealed that 74.1% of registered Iowa voters participated in the 2024 election, with a total of 1,674,011 ballots cast. This election saw a notable increase in early voting by registered Republicans, surpassing Democrats for the first time. Pate attributed this shift to a concerted effort by GOP leadership to encourage early voting.
The high participation rate and smooth recount processes in the state were also credited to recent changes in election laws. Secretary of State Pate announced plans to bring requests to the state Legislature in 2025 to further streamline the election process. Additionally, he is in discussions with lawmakers regarding noncitizen voting and ensuring the accuracy of voter rolls.
Despite criticisms from groups like the ACLU and the League of United Latin American Citizens, Pate defended his actions, citing the lack of access to federal databases needed to verify citizenship status. Moving forward, Pate emphasized the importance of continuing to improve and strengthen electoral processes in Iowa.
