University Print Society Hosts Unique Postcard Print Exchange Exhibition at College of Design

The College of Design is currently showcasing the University Print Society’s postcard print exchange exhibition, which will be open for public viewing until December 6. This innovative exhibition features an exchange portfolio where printmakers from around the globe send in their artworks, which are displayed for everyone to appreciate.

Natalie Deam, president of the University Print Society, explained that participants print 13 postcards and, in return, receive 12 postcards from fellow printmakers worldwide. "This exchange allows printmakers to share their artwork at no cost, creating a unique interaction experience," Deam noted.

The theme for this year’s exhibition, chosen by student members, is “Insects and Their Environment.” This theme encourages a creative exploration of ecological relationships, contrasting with last year’s focus on “anarchy, rules we break, and mutually assured destruction.” Visitors may see samples from previous exchanges, providing insight into the diverse interpretations of these themes.

Among the featured artists is Nick Phan, a lecturer at the Kansas City Art Institute. His piece titled “brain rot,” depicts a cockroach within a brain, reflecting his experience of information overload from constant phone use. “It demonstrates the value of physical art; there’s something irreplaceable about holding a piece in your hands,” Phan expressed.

Carsyn Rains, a senior in integrated studio arts, also contributed work from last year, creatively representing cinematic chaos through a purge mask.

Raluca Iancu, an assistant professor of art and visual culture, encourages students interested in printmaking and book arts to enroll in related courses offered at the college. The artwork showcased in the exhibition is available for purchase through a silent auction, which runs until December 6 at 4 p.m. Please note, the exhibit will be closed from November 25 to 29 for Thanksgiving break.
