Hackers breach Library of Congress email system, gaining access to officials’ communications

The Library of Congress disclosed that hackers breached its communication systems, enabling them to access email correspondence between congressional offices and Library of Congress staff, including the Congressional Research Service, from January to September of this year. The hackers exploited a software vulnerability that has since been fixed, and the matter has been reported to law enforcement for investigation. The Library of Congress did not identify the hackers, only referring to them as “the adversary.” Countries with advanced cyber espionage capabilities, such as the United States, China, and Russia, are known for targeting government networks and communications of other countries to gather intelligence. In a recent incident, Russian cyber spies were accused of hacking into a widely used software made by SolarWinds, leading to access to U.S. agencies and private companies. China has also faced accusations of cyber espionage, including hacking into American telecommunications companies to spy on presidential campaigns and the staff of Senator Chuck Schumer. Both the Russian and Chinese embassies in Washington, D.C., have denied the allegations.
