The Iowa sports betting market saw a strong performance in August, with both online and retail sportsbooks showing gains in handle and revenue compared to the previous month and year. According to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, sports betting handle reached nearly $167.0 million in August, up 18.2% from the same time last year. Online sportsbooks accounted for the majority of the handle, with a 18.3% increase compared to last year. Retail sportsbooks also saw growth, generating $10.9 million in handle, up 16.0% from last year.
In terms of top performers, DraftKings led the market with $64.3 million in handle, followed by FanDuel and Caesars Sportsbook. The state’s casino industry also performed well, with $144.2 million in adjusted gross revenue, a slight increase from the previous year.
While Iowa’s casino market continues to perform steadily, the state’s moratorium on new casino licenses remains in place until at least 2025. The state has yet to legalize real-money online casinos, but residents can play at certain sweepstakes casinos. In early 2023, thirteen of the state’s commercial casinos supported iGaming.
Overall, August was a positive month for the Iowa sports betting and casino industries, with strong handle and revenue figures. With the start of the NFL season, September is expected to see a further rise in sports betting activity.
