High school students from the region recently participated in Discover Engineering Day at Penn State DuBois, aimed at introducing them to the various opportunities in the engineering field. Over 115 students engaged in hands-on activities and gained insights into the practical and creative aspects of engineering beyond just math and science. Aerospace engineering student Maddy Kinevy expressed hopes that students would understand how engineering can make a real impact on the world.
The event began with introductions from engineering ambassadors and Penn State DuBois representatives, followed by group activities where students worked on engineering challenges. One highlight was coding and operating robots, showing students that engineering involves persistence and problem-solving skills. A panel discussion on college life, led by engineering students, provided advice and insights into studying engineering. Industrial engineering student Siya Sehgal noted how students were motivated to work in teams and improve their designs throughout the day.
The event concluded with a campus tour led by Penn State DuBois Lion Ambassadors, giving students the chance to explore engineering labs and campus facilities. The event successfully showcased the diversity of paths within engineering and provided a hands-on experience demonstrating the field’s impact on the world. Students left the event with a deeper understanding of what engineering entails and the potential it has to shape the future.
