Original Handwritten Dad’s Army Script Available for Purchase

Handwritten ‘Dad’s Army’ Script Set to Fetch Up to £5,000 at Auction

A handwritten script for the beloved British sitcom "Dad’s Army" will be auctioned off on December 31, potentially fetching up to £5,000. The script, titled "Sgt – Save My Boy!" and penned by co-creator David Croft, was gifted to a student during their work experience in the 1990s. It was recently rediscovered on the Antiques Roadshow, generating significant excitement among fans and collectors.

Andrew Stowe, the auctioneer from Auctioneum in Bristol, expressed the script’s unique value, saying, "We have the original ‘warts-and-all’ manuscript, direct from David Croft’s brain, put straight on the page. It’s quite remarkable." He emphasized the show’s enduring popularity, noting its continued viewership, with millions of fans still tuning in to enjoy episodes.

The 34-page manuscript includes a separate letter from Croft, in which he humorously confesses, "I can write better than this but in trying to keep up with my thoughts, legibility goes out of the window." The plot centers around Private Pike, portrayed by Ian Lavender, who finds himself in a perilous situation on a mined beach and requires rescue from his platoon in the fictional coastal town of Walmington-on-Sea.

This auction is part of Auctioneum’s British Comedy, TV & Film Auction, highlighting the cherished legacy of British television. Fans can follow BBC Bristol for updates and submit story ideas via email or WhatsApp. With such a significant piece of television history on the block, anticipation is high for the auction’s outcome.
