A panel discussion titled “Watergate 50 Years Later: What have we learned?” will be held at the Memorial Union on September 5th at 5:30 p.m. The event will take place in the Great Hall of the MU and will feature three panelists – Ed Mezvinsky, Jonathan R. Yarowsky, and Jeff Ubiois, with Kathie Obradovich serving as the moderator.
The panelists will discuss the lessons learned from the Watergate scandal, the use of impeachment since former president Richard Nixon resigned, and the impact of the expansion of presidential immunity by the Supreme Court. Mezvinsky, an Ames native, served in the Iowa House of Representatives and U.S. House of Representatives, and was a member of the House Judiciary Committee during Nixon’s impeachment proceedings in 1974.
Yarowsky, who has extensive experience in legal counsel roles within the U.S. House of Representatives, served as special counsel for former president Bill Clinton. Ubiois, who has worked closely with Mezvinsky on Watergate records, is the Vice President of Knowledge Management at Lever for Change for the MacArthur Foundation.
Obradovich, the editor-in-chief of the Iowa Capital Dispatch, will moderate the evening’s discussion. With 37 years of reporting experience in Iowa, she brings a wealth of knowledge to the panel.
The event promises to provide valuable insights into the lasting impact of the Watergate scandal and its relevance in today’s political climate. For more information on lectures at Iowa State University, visit their website.
