Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds Addresses Controversy Surrounding Lutheran Church Allegations

Concerns Emerge Over Allegations Against Iowa Lutheran Organizations

DES MOINES, Iowa — Allegations made by former Trump advisor Michael Flynn suggesting that Lutheran churches and organizations are engaged in a "money-laundering operation" have stirred controversy among Iowans. The claims surfaced on social media and were amplified by Elon Musk, raising questions during a recent House government efficiency hearing where Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds testified.

During the hearing, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi pressed Governor Reynolds on whether she believed Lutheran Family Services were involved in such activities. Reynolds, while supporting a federal review of government spending under the Trump Administration, refrained from directly condemning the claims, stating, "Every program should be looked at." Her responses left many confused, leading to further scrutiny of her stance.

In a subsequent statement, Governor Reynolds clarified her position, asserting, "I absolutely do not think that Lutheran Services is a money laundering organization." She emphasized their significant charitable work in Iowa, which aids hundreds of thousands in need.

Rev. Minna Bothwell, an ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, vehemently defended the integrity of these organizations. In her view, the ministries play a critical role in providing essential services to vulnerable communities, from supporting children to aiding refugees. She criticized the allegations as misleading, warning that such insinuations could undermine public trust in institutions that often step in where government fails.

In the context of a broader campaign under the slogan “Freedom to Flourish,” Reynolds underscored the importance of supporting all Iowans, especially the vulnerable. Bothwell reiterated that true flourishing encompasses community care, asserting that organizations like Lutheran Services exemplify the values Iowans stand for: compassion, community, and care for their neighbors.
