Baccam, who served in the Iowa Army National Guard and deployed to Afghanistan in 2004, believes his history of service will resonate with voters in the closely contested district. He is running against incumbent Republican Rep. Zach Nunn, a veteran of the Air Force and Iowa National Guard.
Baccam has highlighted his support for abortion rights as a key difference between himself and Nunn, who previously supported a six-week abortion ban in Iowa. Baccam is advocating for federal legislation to protect access to contraceptives and in vitro fertilization, as well as codifying Roe v. Wade. Nunn’s campaign has pushed back against Baccam’s characterization of his position on abortion, stating that Nunn supports exceptions and access to contraceptives and IVF.
The issue of border security has also emerged as a key topic in the race. Nunn has identified border security as a top concern for voters, while Baccam has criticized Congress for failing to address the issue in a bipartisan manner. Baccam believes that partisan politics have hindered progress on important issues like immigration reform and vows to work towards passing meaningful legislation if elected.
The race in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District is expected to be competitive, with both candidates vying for independent voters and highlighting their contrasting views on key issues like abortion rights and border security.
