On Thursday, a possible meteorite was seen streaking across the sky in the Southeastern U.S., generating numerous reports of a fireball in the region just before noon. The National Weather Service in Charleston indicated that satellite-based lightning detection identified a streak in the clear sky over the North Carolina/Virginia border, specifically over Gasbury, VA, between 11:51 and 11:56 a.m.
Videos shared on social media showcased the breathtaking moment, with one notable clip captured by Kathryn Farr using her car’s dashcam while traveling south on Interstate 85 towards Anderson, South Carolina, at approximately 12:25 p.m. The footage depicted the fireball plunging into a wooded area, prompting Farr to remark, “Not something you see every day,” on Facebook. Additional footage from Lexington, South Carolina, illustrated the meteorite’s intense white brightness paired with an orange flame tail before it disappeared into the trees.
The Newton County sheriff’s office in Georgia reported that the weather service had informed them that the fireball was likely a meteor, suggesting that more may follow. While the sheriff’s office confirmed the fireball was noted by residents in Covington and surrounding areas, they stated that they currently have no information regarding the meteor’s potential landing site. This event captivated the attention of numerous witnesses across the region, highlighting a rare occurrence in the daytime sky.
