New Zealand pilot Phillip Mehrtens has been released after over one and a half years in captivity in Indonesia’s West Papua region, according to Indonesian police. He was held by the West Papua National Liberation Army (TPNPB) as a bargaining chip for independence. The rebels offered terms for his release, including media involvement and a suspension of military operations.
Mehrtens’ kidnapping has drawn attention to the ongoing conflict in West Papua, where Indigenous West Papuans face police and military brutality for acts of civil disobedience. The TPNPB, the armed wing of the Free West Papua Movement, continues to call for self-determination and a fair vote.
The region has been under Indonesian control since 1969, and UN experts have raised serious concerns about human rights abuses against Indigenous Papuans, including child killings, disappearances, torture, and mass displacement. The release of Mehrtens is seen as a positive step towards peace in the region.
The New Zealand government has been called upon to provide support for Mehrtens as he shares his experiences with the TPNPB. The terms for his release highlight the ongoing struggle for independence and the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in West Papua.
