Preacher in the Philippines denies child abuse and trafficking charges in court

Philippines celebrity preacher Apollo Quiboloy, also known as the “anointed son of God”, has pleaded not guilty to charges of sex abuse of children and human trafficking. The 74-year-old, a close ally of former President Rodrigo Duterte, was arrested after a search of his church’s compound by over 2,000 security personnel. Two alleged victims, who were reportedly molested when they were 12 or 13 years old, have indicated that they will testify against him.

Quiboloy’s lawyer maintains his innocence, stating that the truth will be disclosed during the legal proceedings. The preacher arrived at his arraignment in Manila wearing a bulletproof helmet and vest, expressing a message in Filipino to his followers to “stay strong.” The Kingdom of Jesus Christ church, of which Quiboloy is the leader, stated that members are not forced to do anything against their will.

In addition to the charges in the Philippines, Quiboloy faces a US indictment for sex trafficking, conspiracy, and child abuse. The indictment alleges that women were recruited as personal assistants for Quiboloy and were required to perform various tasks, including having sex with him. Despite the US indictment, the government of the Philippines is currently focusing on the cases filed within its borders and is not considering extraditing Quiboloy to the United States at this time.

Quiboloy’s case has drawn attention due to his large following in the Philippines, where church leaders hold significant influence in politics. A pre-trial hearing for the charges against him is scheduled for October, where more details about the allegations are expected to be revealed.
