Juan Carlos Delpino, a member of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council, has spoken out about the lack of transparency in the recent presidential election, which declared Nicolás Maduro as the winner despite evidence to the contrary. Delpino detailed several irregularities, including slow reporting of results from voting machines and the banishment of opposition volunteers from polling centers. He decided not to monitor the vote-counting or attend the press conference where Maduro was declared the winner in protest.
Maduro continues to claim victory by over 1 million votes, while the opposition released tallies showing their candidate, Edmundo González, won by a large margin. The Supreme Court has certified the results and accused the opposition of forging tallies, leading to a criminal investigation.
Delpino’s letter also highlighted other irregularities by the CNE, such as a lack of meetings prior to the vote making it difficult to set clear rules on participation. The opposition has faced backlash, with González and Maria Corina Machado going into hiding and facing criminal charges for contesting the election results.
Delpino’s denouncement adds to the ongoing political turmoil in Venezuela, with the international community questioning the legitimacy of Maduro’s win. The lack of transparency and alleged irregularities in the election process have further divided the Venezuelan people and fueled doubts in both the population and the international community.
