Israeli airstrikes hit a school in central Gaza used by displaced people, killing at least 30 individuals. The strike targeted a Hamas command center storing weapons and planning attacks. In response, Israel’s military ordered the evacuation of a humanitarian zone in Gaza before a planned strike on Khan Younis. Additionally, a dozen people were killed in other strikes in Gaza. These events occurred as negotiators from the US, Egypt, Qatar, and Israel prepared to meet in Italy to discuss ongoing hostage and ceasefire negotiations.
The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, expressed concern over the forced displacement orders affecting those sheltering in the humanitarian zone. The agency’s director of communications described the situation as forced displacement rather than evacuation. The conflict began with a Hamas assault on southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,200 individuals, mostly civilians, and the taking of about 250 hostages. Approximately 115 hostages are still in Gaza, with a third believed to be deceased.
The airstrikes on the school and the evacuation order highlight the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis in Gaza. International mediators are working towards a ceasefire to end the conflict and bring relief to the affected populations. The tragic events underscore the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Gaza to prevent further loss of life and human suffering.
