Bridgestone to shut down tire plant in Tennessee, laying off 700 employees and making other cutbacks

Bridgestone Americas is closing its truck and bus radial tire plant in LaVergne, Tennessee, laying off 700 workers as part of a strategic move to optimize its business operations and increase competitiveness. The company is also making capacity and workforce reductions at its agriculture tire plant in Des Moines, Iowa, as well as in U.S. corporate, sales, and operations divisions. Additionally, Bridgestone plans to reduce workforce and production capacity in Argentina and Brazil in Latin America.

Company spokesperson Emily Weaver stated that these reductions are necessary due to the challenging economic environment. About 4% of Bridgestone Americas’ nearly 44,000 employees in North America and Latin America will be affected by these voluntary and involuntary workforce reductions.

The LaVergne plant, the company’s first tire-producing facility in North America, stopped making tires for cars and light trucks in 2009, leading to layoffs at that time as well. Workers at the LaVergne plant who are part of the United Steelworkers master union have preferential hiring rights at Bridgestone’s other plants in Des Moines, Akron, and Russellville.

Overall, Bridgestone Americas is restructuring its operations to enhance efficiency and competitiveness amidst the current economic challenges, resulting in these workforce and capacity reductions across various locations in North and Latin America.
