Iowa City and Davenport Starbucks workers are set to join a nationwide strike of 10,000 baristas on Christmas Eve due to stalled contract negotiations. Davenport’s 53rd St. location will start striking at 7 a.m., while Iowa City’s Clinton St. location will follow at 9 a.m. Workers in Seattle, Los Angeles, and Chicago are already on the picket lines. The Workers Union alleges that Starbucks can afford to increase wages and improve working conditions, pointing to the CEO’s compensation package of over $100 million. Baristas are demanding higher pay, more staffing, and better scheduling to address the grueling work conditions they face during the holidays. Abigail Scheppmann, a barista and shift manager in Iowa City, expressed frustration with the disparity between CEO compensation and worker raises. Previous strikes in 2022 and 2023 were centered around similar issues like pay raises and benefits. Workers are calling for Starbucks to value and prioritize their employees, who play a crucial role in the company’s success.
