Prosecutor drops attempt to revive charges against Alec Baldwin in ‘Rust’ shooting incident

The special prosecutor in the involuntary manslaughter case against Alec Baldwin in the deadly shooting on the set of the movie “Rust” has withdrawn an attempt to reinstate charges. The case was dismissed in the summer after a judge ruled that important evidence was withheld by prosecutors. Baldwin pleaded not guilty, claiming innocence and stating he did not pull the trigger of the prop gun that discharged on set, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring director Joel Souza. Movie armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in Hutchins’ death.

The special prosecutor’s attempt to appeal the dismissal was withdrawn, as argued evidence that was not intentionally suppressed did not affect Baldwin’s innocence or guilt. A civil suit against Baldwin, who was also a co-producer of the film, is pending with Hutchins’ parents represented by attorney Gloria Allred. Baldwin has sought to have the case dismissed, claiming the plaintiffs had been distanced from Hutchins before her death and have no viable cause of action.

Baldwin did not immediately respond to the civil suit announcement and has not commented on recent developments. Hutchins’ family continues to fight for justice in civil court. The dismissal of the criminal case against Baldwin does not affect the civil case, as Allred believes all celebrities and producers should follow safety protocols to ensure a safe workplace for all crew members, regardless of their status.
