Mixed reactions follow Congress’ passage of year-long extension to Farm Bill

Iowa’s representatives in Congress recently voted to pass the American Relief Act, 2025, which was signed into law by President Joe Biden. The legislation includes funding for federal agencies and extends the Farm Bill, providing disaster relief and economic assistance to farmers. The Farm Bill covers various programs to support farmers, and this one-year extension is the second for the 2018 Farm Bill.

The American Relief Act allocates $10 billion for emergency payments to farmers affected by low commodity prices and natural disasters. However, some provisions, such as authorizing year-round E15 ethanol sales, were dropped from the final bill, leading to mixed reactions from industry groups.

The National Pork Producers Council expressed disappointment over the extension’s failure to address issues caused by California’s Proposition 12, which requires certain space standards for breeding pigs sold in the state. Despite the extension, many farming families are still facing uncertainty, and there is a call for a new Farm Bill to provide long-term stability and support to the agriculture industry.
