AAA is gearing up for a record-breaking travel season, but national traffic safety officials are warning that this week is one of the deadliest of the year for drivers. The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau in Iowa is partnering with law enforcement to urge drivers to “designate before you celebrate.” Last year, 990 drunk drivers were arrested in Iowa, with 37% of traffic deaths related to drunk driving.
Trooper Bob Conrad of the Iowa State Patrol emphasized the importance of holding oneself accountable for their actions on the road, stating that driving impaired puts others at risk and can result in devastating consequences. He highlighted the financial costs of an OWI conviction, which can total up to $10,000, far more than the price of a taxi or rideshare service.
To combat drunk driving during this busy travel season, AAA is offering free rides within a ten-mile radius through its Tow to Go program. However, they stress that this service should be used as a last resort and urge travelers to plan ahead and secure a designated driver. Authorities recommend always having a sober driver, calling a taxi or rideshare service, or utilizing community programs for sober rides if available.
As drivers hit the road for the holidays, it is critical to prioritize safety and responsible decision-making. By taking precautions and ensuring that a sober driver is designated before celebrating, drivers can help prevent needless tragedies on the road.
