Iowa Celebrates Birthday with Freedom Ringing | Latest Updates on News, Sports, Jobs

Iowa has a unique reason to celebrate during the last week of December, as it marks the 178th birthday of the state on December 28th. Iowa became the 29th state in 1846 when President James K. Polk signed a bill admitting it into the Union. Iowa has always been a free state, with a rich history of participation in the Underground Railroad to help enslaved people escape to freedom. The state played a significant role in the Civil War, with the highest per capita number of soldiers enlisted in the Union army. Today, there are 26 recognized Underground Railroad sites in Iowa, open to the public for historical education. As Iowa celebrates its statehood, Senator Charles Grassley encourages Iowans to remember the sacrifices of early settlers and to recommit to America’s promise of freedom and prosperity for future generations. Grassley also highlights his efforts in combatting modern human trafficking and protecting vulnerable populations. As Iowans look forward to the New Year, they are urged to honor the state’s heritage and continue advocating for freedom and civic engagement.
