Nokia has recently announced a four-year agreement with EOLO to deploy the first 5G standalone mmWave Radio Access Network in Europe, specifically in Italy. This partnership aims to connect underserved communities and bridge the digital divide in the country. Nokia will provide equipment from its 5G AirScale portfolio, including next-generation baseband solutions, Massive MIMO radios, and Remote Radio Head products, all powered by energy-efficient ReefShark System-on-Chip technology. The compact Shikra mmWave radios will also be used to deliver 5G capacity and coverage, especially in dense urban areas.
The Nokia Shikra mmWave solution will also offer fixed wireless access services to rural communities where traditional wired infrastructure may not be feasible. This solution includes the Nokia FastMile 5G mmWave outdoor receiver, which will enable reliable connectivity to homes in areas where fiber deployment is challenging. This partnership aims to provide up to 1 Gbps of connectivity to the entire Italian market, addressing the digital speed divide in the country.
Guido Garrone, EOLO’s CEO, expressed excitement about this project, emphasizing the aim to improve customer experience and bridge the digital divide in Italy. Tommi Uitto, Nokia’s president of mobile networks, highlighted the importance of this partnership in introducing innovative connectivity solutions and serving underserved communities. This collaboration promises to bring new connectivity experiences and high-quality service to subscribers across Italy, ultimately contributing to the development of the country’s telecommunications infrastructure.
