Dr. Ted Bonebrake, a Cedar Falls physician, has had his medical license suspended by state officials for the fourth time due to allegations of substance abuse and violating practice restrictions. The Iowa Board of Medicine has charged Bonebrake with improper management of medical records and violating an order from the Iowa Physician Health Program. This program helps physicians with mental health, physical health, and substance abuse issues.
The board alleges that Bonebrake was writing multiple narcotic prescriptions and accepting money for them while under a cease-practice agreement with the Physician Health Program. Despite numerous past sanctions from the board, including a car accident related to alcohol consumption in 2005, Bonebrake’s license was restored in 2022 with full privileges and no restrictions.
An emergency order was issued to suspend Bonebrake’s license, and a hearing was held on December 12th to address the charges. It remains unclear what action, if any, has been taken in the case. Bonebrake has a history of substance abuse issues dating back to 2001, including violations of probation and multiple positive drug tests.
