Iowa State University professors, Matt Darr and Eric Cochran, have been inducted as fellows into the National Academy of Inventors for their significant contributions to innovation and invention. With a combined total of 141 patents and technology transfer licenses, the professors have seen the real-world impact of their work in various fields such as agricultural technology and chemical recycling. Cochran explained the process of obtaining a patent, which can take around five years starting with a provisional application. Darr shared a memorable moment of seeing a sugarcane farmer’s excitement when introduced to new technology that will enhance his crop monitoring. Both professors hope to inspire young inventors, especially within their university, to pursue commercial innovation. They believe that the recognition from the National Academy of Inventors will help raise visibility for inventors in academia and encourage more individuals to make a positive impact through their work. Iowa State University’s motto of “science with practice” reflects its commitment to supporting and promoting innovation for the benefit of society.
