Iowa turkey producer Tim Meyer from Henry County is emphasizing the importance of biosecurity amidst the increase in highly pathogenic avian influenza cases across the state. Meyer, who raises nearly 60,000 turkeys annually, is taking measures to protect his flock, including strict control of who enters the sheds and disinfecting feed trucks. He notes that while his farm has avoided positive detections of H5N1, other areas in Iowa have not been so fortunate.
In an interview with Brownfield, Meyer expressed his concern for those affected by the outbreak and highlighted the need for the industry as a whole to step up biosecurity measures. He credits the lack of cases in his area to migratory birds not passing through as usual. Most cases of avian influenza in Iowa poultry flocks in 2024 have been reported in the western part of the state.
Meyer’s proactive approach to biosecurity serves as a reminder of the necessity to prioritize disease prevention in poultry production to mitigate the impact of avian influenza outbreaks.
