State Funding Awarded for Czech Clock Tower Renovation: Government Provides $42K


The National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in Cedar Rapids has received a $42,500 state grant for the renovation of its Orloj Clock Tower. The tower, modeled after the famous Prague Orloj, is the only one of its kind in the United States. The renovation was necessary due to flood and derecho damage, and the project cost a total of $685,000.

In other news, the city of Cedar Rapids is seeking resident input for its annual budget survey for fiscal year 2026. Participants will have a chance to win tickets to an Iowa women’s basketball game. Meanwhile, the city of Iowa City is seeking public input on its five-year consolidated plan, City Steps 2030, aimed at improving housing and living conditions for residents.

Cedar Rapids City Council member Ashley Vanorny received the Centennial Under 40 Impact Award from the National League of Cities for her outstanding contributions to public service. Additionally, VenuWorks has appointed Darren Stearns as its new executive director, overseeing venues in Cedar Rapids.

On the development front, Cedar Rapids approved a redevelopment agreement for the former Higley Mansion, which will reopen as a residential substance use treatment facility. Marion is also seeking input on the redesign of its city website.
