The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed the first human case of avian influenza A(H5) in the state. The individual, who works with a commercial poultry flock in northwest Iowa, is recovering after experiencing mild symptoms. The case was confirmed through testing by the State Hygienic Laboratory and the CDC.
Across nine states, there have been a total of 64 human cases of H5 avian influenza, mostly linked to exposure to infected poultry or dairy cows. However, there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission in the U.S.
Health officials are advising those with direct contact with exposed animals to wear protective gear and seek medical advice if flu-like symptoms or eye infections develop. They also reassured the public that there is no risk to the safety of eggs, poultry, or pasteurized dairy products when properly handled and cooked.
This news serves as a reminder for those working closely with birds to take precautions to prevent the spread of avian influenza.
