Governor Reynolds schedules special election for Iowa Senate District 35

Governor Kim Reynolds has announced a special election for Iowa Senate District 35 on January 28, 2025, following the resignation of former Senator Chris Cournoyer, who was appointed lieutenant governor. Senate District 35 includes Clinton County, parts of Jackson and Scott Counties, and several cities such as Clinton and Maquoketa.

Per Iowa Code section 69.14, the governor has the authority to set the election date. The official proclamation from Gov. Reynolds declares the vacancy and sets the date for the special election. The County Commissioners of Elections in the three counties within the district will provide official notice of the election.

Residents of Senate District 35 will have the opportunity to elect a new senator to represent them in the Iowa General Assembly. The special election will determine who will fill the vacant seat left by Sen. Cournoyer. This announcement marks the beginning of the process to ensure the district has representation as soon as possible.
