Former President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against prominent political analyst and pollster Ann Selzer, the Des Moines Register, and its parent company Gannett for “brazen election interference” and fraud. The lawsuit was filed in Polk County, Iowa under the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act, claiming that Selzer incorrectly predicted a win for Vice President Kamala Harris in Iowa just a day before the presidential election. Trump went on to win the state by 13 percentage points.
The lawsuit alleges that Selzer and the Register showed favoritism towards Harris through a leaked and manipulated poll conducted by Selzer and S&C, published by the Des Moines Register, which purported to show Harris leading Trump in Iowa by three points. The suit claims that this type of manipulation creates a false narrative of inevitability for Democrat candidates and deceives the public.
This legal action comes after ABC News and George Stephanopoulos settled a defamation lawsuit with Trump by apologizing and paying $15 million to his presidential foundation. Trump has threatened continued legal action against Selzer and media entities that he has long accused of bias.
In response to accusations of election interference, Selzer stated in an interview with PBS that she was “mystified” about the motivations behind the allegations and denied intentionally manipulating the poll results. She emphasized that she takes the allegations seriously and that it goes against her ethics to engage in such behavior.
Overall, Trump’s lawsuit against Selzer and the Des Moines Register highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding the accuracy and reliability of polling data and accusations of election interference.
