Airtel India is utilizing innovative technologies and partnerships to address network challenges and expand coverage for its more than 400 million mobile phone customers. The telecom operator has deployed Free-Space Optical Communications (FSOC), in collaboration with Taara, a division of Alphabet’s X moonshot, to overcome limitations of traditional technologies. FSOC uses light beams in the high terahertz spectrum, offering cost advantages, low energy consumption, and ease of deployment.
The collaboration with Taara has enabled Airtel to deploy Wireless Optical Communication (WOC) products in regions with unique challenges like high right-of-way costs and monsoons, improving network reliability and efficiency. Airtel’s focus on network expansion is supported by investments in 5G technology and fixed wireless access (FWA) networks, with FSOC serving as a key enabler for backhaul solutions.
By leveraging Taara’s advanced technologies, Airtel has enhanced the reliability of FSOC, making it a viable alternative to fibre and microwave technologies. The cost efficiencies of FSOC have improved the economics of network expansion, helping Airtel bridge coverage gaps in underserved areas. The strategic blend of technological innovation and regional solutions positions Airtel as a leader in bridging digital divides across India.
Looking to the future, Airtel plans to further scale the deployment of FSOC, unlocking additional use cases and strengthening its network infrastructure. By evaluating the total cost of ownership of FSOC against other solutions and leveraging advancements in technology, Airtel aims to address diverse connectivity challenges and enhance its network capabilities.
