Bluesky, a growing social media platform, is facing various challenges including government censorship, scam accounts, celebrity impersonation, propaganda, and a user revolt over journalist Jesse Singal’s controversial presence. Despite these hurdles, Bluesky has attracted nearly 25 million users and is gaining mainstream attention. The platform is also grappling with moderation issues like handling a surge in moderation reports and dealing with scammers and fake accounts. Bluesky has been aggressive in shutting down fraudulent accounts but is still struggling with issues like copyright complaints and identifying and removing posts containing child sexual abuse material. The platform also faces challenges of verifying account authenticity and dealing with state-controlled news agencies. However, Bluesky does not have immediate plans to label state-controlled news agencies and relies on user tips to identify propaganda activity. The platform has been blocked by censorship-prone governments like China and Pakistan, but Bluesky aims to support a free and open internet. Despite the challenges, Bluesky is still relatively small, and efforts towards them from nation-states are limited.
