More than 80 people fall ill after consuming raw oysters at a Los Angeles restaurant showcase event

Around 80 people fell ill after eating raw oysters at a Los Angeles Times “101 Best Restaurants” event at the Hollywood Palladium on December 3. The oysters, specifically Fanny Bay Select and Fanny Bay XS oysters, were later recalled due to potential norovirus contamination. The oysters were from Pacific Northwest Shellfish Co. and were harvested in British Columbia. The Food and Drug Administration warned restaurants and retailers in 14 states and the District of Columbia to not serve or sell oysters harvested in certain parts of British Columbia. Norovirus causes symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, body aches, and fever, with symptoms appearing 12 to 48 hours after exposure. Oysters and shellfish can absorb the virus from contaminated water. The Los Angeles County health department is investigating the outbreak. The Los Angeles Times spokesperson said they take food safety seriously and were following relevant safety standards at the event. The “101 Best Restaurants” list was created by the newspaper’s restaurant critic Jonathan Gold, who passed away in 2018.
