First case of avian influenza detected in a human in Iowa

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed the first human case of avian influenza in the state. The individual was exposed to infected poultry while working with a commercial flock in northwest Iowa and is currently receiving treatment and recovering from mild symptoms. The case was identified through testing at the State Hygienic Laboratory and confirmed by the CDC.

This is the 64th confirmed case of H5 HPAI in humans across nine states, with no evidence of human-to-human transmission in the U.S. Most exposures are linked to infected poultry or dairy cows. Iowa HHS State Medical Director Dr. Robert Kruse reassured that the state is prepared to mitigate the impact of avian influenza, having monitored its spread closely since it was first detected in poultry in 2022.

Officials stated there is no concern about the safety of eggs, poultry products, pasteurized milk, and dairy products. Despite this human case, the risk to the general public is considered low. The Iowa HHS continues to work with partners to monitor and control the spread of avian influenza in the state. This development serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices when working with poultry and other animals to prevent the spread of diseases.
