The Dakota Exiles, a group of Dakota riders, are on an annual journey from Nebraska to Mankato to honor those displaced after the Dakota War of 1862. The riders camped in tipis at the Osceola County Fairgrounds in Sibley before continuing their trek. Their mission is to remember the indigenous women and children who suffered due to American colonialism. The group was founded in 2020 and uses social media to raise awareness about their ride. They also seek to bring Dakota families closer together and connect with their cultural heritage. One of the highlights of their journey will be reuniting with Chief White Dog’s ceremonial pipe upon reaching Mankato. Despite facing harsh winter conditions, the riders are motivated to stand up for their people and bring attention to their history.
