University of Iowa Geological Survey marks a decade in operation

The Iowa Geological Survey, part of the University of Iowa for the past decade, has completed nearly 200 research projects focused on the state’s geology and water resources. Under the leadership of director Keith Schilling and Larry Weber of the Hydroscience & Engineering department, the survey has seen significant growth in projects and funding. With a doubled workforce and increased funding sources, including municipal, federal, and state support, the survey has made strides in areas like water quality and carbon dioxide sequestration. Despite budget constraints, the survey has made an impact in Iowa and received praise from the dean of the UI College of Engineering, Ann McKenna. The transition from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to the UI was challenging, but has allowed the survey to innovate and pursue new projects that interest the team and benefit the public. With a focus on entrepreneurship and research, the Iowa Geological Survey continues to make important contributions to the state and its environment.
