Senator Grassley cautions that closing portions of the federal government comes with financial consequences

Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, a Republican, has stated that he does not support a government shutdown amid budget fights. Congress is discussing a temporary spending plan to fund federal operations until March, with additions such as a 3.8% raise for members of Congress. However, billionaire businessman Elon Musk and President Trump have both spoken out against the compromise spending proposal.

Grassley emphasized that failing to reach a compromise on a spending agreement and temporarily shutting down federal services will cost additional money. President Trump has demanded that an agreement to raise the federal government’s debt ceiling be included in the final proposal. By Wednesday evening, the bipartisan spending plan released earlier had been declared dead by House Majority Leader Steve Scalise.

Lawmakers are continuing negotiations on the budget, and CNN is following the latest developments. Dave Price, Gray Television’s Iowa Political Director, has been covering local, state, and national politics in Iowa since 2001. He produces and hosts “Inside Iowa Politics,” a show focused on interviews with top leaders on political issues.
