Federal prosecutors are considering charging Luigi Mangione for the murder of United Healthcare’s CEO, Brian Thompson. The murder occurred in Manhattan, where Mangione shot Thompson from behind as he walked on a sidewalk. Mangione was indicted on first-degree murder and other charges, with authorities believing he targeted Thompson due to the size of the health insurance company he led. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg described the killing as intended to cause shock, attention, and intimidation.
Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania after being recognized from surveillance photos and is currently contesting extradition to New York. If convicted of first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, he could face life in prison without parole. If convicted of second-degree murder, the maximum sentence is 25 years to life. Federal charges may be filed against Mangione in addition to the New York state murder case. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York declined to comment on the matter, as did the FBI and New York Police Department.
The case is ongoing, with a hearing scheduled for Mangione’s extradition to New York. The investigation into the motive behind the targeted killing continues, with authorities looking into the possibility of federal charges being filed against Mangione.
