Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO, Brian Thompson, was not insured by the company. This information was confirmed by UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare. Mangione is believed to have targeted Thompson because of the company’s size, as evidenced by his social media posts mentioning UnitedHealthcare as the fifth-largest corporation in America. Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania after being recognized from police photos and found in possession of a gun, silencer, and handwritten documents referencing the health care industry. The handwritten document contained the phrase “these parasites simply had it coming.” Police have also matched the gun recovered with shell casings found at the scene of the shooting, and discovered that it was a ghost gun made with a 3-D printer.
Mangione, who has a history of discussing debilitating back pain on social media, is being held in Pennsylvania on weapons, forgery, and other charges, and is fighting extradition to New York. He is expected to be charged with murder once he is brought back to New York. Authorities have stated that the killing was targeted, and Mangione arrived in New York City on Nov. 24 and stayed at a hostel before the shooting. Mangione’s attorney has indicated that he plans to plead not guilty to all charges. The investigation into the shooting of Brian Thompson remains ongoing.
